Bob Proctor - A Self-help Professional

Born in 1935 as the middle child of a modest family in northern Ontario, Canada, Robert Proctor was not an outstanding youth. Born into a worldwide depression that only gave way for a Second World War, Bob (like many of his peers) just wasn’t interested in school. As a result, he didn’t do very well, eventually dropping out after just a few months of high school.

Even in the 1950s there were few lucrative career choices for high-school dropouts, so he soon joined the Canadian Navy for a four-year stint. After a mostly uneventful stint, he came home to Ontario, settling down in Toronto to work as a fire fighter. He has since described himself during this period as being “broke, sick and miserable.” So, when his friend Ray Stanford gave him a copy of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, he was ready for a change.

He quickly decided to put the ideas outlined in the book to use. The first thing he did was take a figure he wanted to make, write it down, concentrate on it and keep it in his pocket. The initial sum of $25,000 may seem modest by today’s standards, but in 1961, it was several times the average blue-collar wage in Toronto, even someone so lucky as to have a steady and lucrative position such as a city employee. To the protests of his brother fire fighters, he quit anyhow.

Shortly, he’d started up a janitorial company that specialized in cleaning offices. Just twelve months after that, he was the head of a nation-wide janitorial chain and had made several times his original goal. Within a few years, he was a millionaire. Clearly the book had some sort of effect. He felt compelled to share this success with others through sharing the secret he’d learned.

Bob was ready to learn more and he devoured all the books he could come across on the subject, many from the 19th century such as those by the proponents of the New Thought Movement. He continued to study and found a mentor in Earl Nightingale, creator of the gold record winning “The Strangest Secret,” and voice of over 7,000 motivational radio broadcasts.

A pioneer of the self-help movement that sprung up in the 1970s, Earl taught sales forces and housewives alike that “You become what you think,” since it occurred to him “like a bolt out of the blue,” while preparing an inspirational talk for insurance salesmen in 1958. Bob went to work with him as a content salesperson in Chicago, Illinois, and soon became Earl’s right hand man.

In the mid 1970’s Proctor decided to begin his career as a life-coach and continues, 30 years later, in that capacity. In the ensuing years, Bob has taught executives at scores of companies such as Prudential and Metropolitan Life as well as Malaysian Airlines.

He continued to seek new material to explain why some people were successful and some were not. Dr. C. Harry Roder of San Antonio’s Concept Therapy Institute, Eric Hoffer of The True Believer fame and Leland Von Syring are among those Bob made the acquaintance of during his travels to work with corporate clients. They gave Bob indispensable advice that he’s incorporated into his programs and seminars. Any time he noticed his life was going along much more smoothly than before, he sought out the nugget of wisdom and investigated it. The resulting program is, in essence, his life’s work.

Today, Bob Proctor presides over seminars worldwide and disseminates his message though several media companies he steers. Coaching Consulting Program is offered along with materials designed to educate users on human motivations that do or don’t lead to success. He continues to offer a twelve-month coaching program through his website that promises to be a rigorous and intensive series materials and conference calls.

He has written numerous books on the topics of getting what you want out of life and fulfilling goals since the 1960s including The Success Puzzle, The Winner’s Image, The Goal Achiever and his highly influential and best-selling, You Were Born Rich. Most recently he’s been featured on the phenomenally successful movie The Gift, as an interviewee and philosopher. With other experts from the film Bob has been conducting seminars to teach people how to use the power of thought to propel themselves into the powerful people they can become.

Bob claims to be spry as ever, in his early 70s, expressing sincere gratitude for his good fortune and abundance every day. He remains committed to the teaching of his system for attaining personal satisfaction.

Coaching for Self Esteem - Seeing Perfection vs Fixing People

The whole class was astonished.

We were all coaches and healers. We’d spent most of our lives in improving ourselves and others. Yet what we saw shook the very foundations of everything we believed.

Our teacher asked for a volunteer to come up front for yet another demonstration. We were about to see something that would make our heads spin.

You might have heard of muscle testing. It’s a technique to find out if something is good for us or bad for us. Chiropractors and other health practitioners use it all the time.

She tested the volunteer for a baseline. In other words, you have to start by making sure the testing works correctly.

Then came the earthquake. Our teacher asked everyone to send healing energy to the volunteer. Then she muscle tested again.

You’re not going to believe this. The person tested weak!

The volunteer weakened when we sent healing energy to her!

We were about to get the next earthquake to complete the collapse of what we thought we knew.

The seminar leader asked everyone to see the person as already perfect in that moment. Guess what.

The volunteer tested strong!

She became weaker when we saw her as needing healing energy. She became stronger when we saw her as already perfect!

Whoa. What have I been doing all my life? What have we been taught?

Our intentions were good, but …

Perfection happens where someone sees themselves or someone else as perfect and does something, or nothing, for the benefit of the other person. The word intention may not even apply. We see the person as already perfect. There is no intention to change anything.

Black magic is where someone has an intention to damage another.

Misguided Intention

What the heck is misguided intention?

Misguided intention is where we see a person or situation as screwed up and we try to fix them. This is gray magic.

Does that shake things up for you? It sure shook me up.

What have I been doing all my life? What have I been taught?

Sure, you can see things as messed up and fix them. For example, you can see a house as dirty. You can then clean it up. And yes, then it’s clean.

Does it stay clean? There is a never-ending activity of cleaning the house as it keeps getting dirty. Does that mean that, if you always see the house as clean, it will always be clean? You still go through the motions of cleaning.

But we want to raise self esteem. And I can tell you that if we always see ourselves in our perfection, that we’ll dissolve anything that limits our self esteem.

This is good stuff!

Humility is fine. But that doesn’t mean that we tear ourselves down.

True humility is seeing perfection in others.

Smiles

Have you seen the Jack Nicholson smile? That smile tells me that Jack is really cool.

How about the Tom Cruise smile? It tells me that we’re both really cool. Does that smile help others to be really cool?

What does all this mean?

We had our foundations shaken. Are we going to go around with the belief that we’re screwed up? Are we going to keep fixing ourselves?

Is there a better way?

Glad you asked! We can practice seeing ourselves and others as already perfect.

This approach goes way beyond fixing your self esteem. There is nothing to fix. All you have to do is see your own perfection.

Would you like to help other people? See them as already perfect.

Mental Self Help - How You Can Learn a Lesson From Fear

Fear is a powerful, primeval emotion that drives so many of your decisions. Fear is a mechanism for the ego to protect itself from change. Fear can keep you locked in a zone that is not of your choosing. Using a simple technique, you can face your fears and learn how to free yourself to make the changes you want in your life.

Fear has performed a vital function for human beings and even higher animals – the function of self preservation. It is a tremendous source of emotional energy that provides us with the power to avoid danger of physical harm.

We have become extremely sophisticated psychological beings over the millennia but we still retain the fear mechanism as one of our fundamental motivators. We now fear not only physical danger but also psychological dangers. You now experience fear of many things: failure, rejection, being inconvenienced by something, loosing some part of your life you have become accustomed to.

You also experience fear of being discovered to be inadequate at something, or loosing the rationale behind some part of your life. Many of these fears are not real, they are purely based on your perception of what is real.

Yet these fears can trap you. Fear is one of the most powerful motivators in your emotional vocabulary and it can overrule almost every other desire.

What can we learn from fear?

Many of your fears are not real, they are not going to cause you any harm, yet the mind power generated by fear makes them seem very real – sometimes even more real than the physical evidence in front of your eyes!

As you examine these fears more closely, you will see that this fear is really a fear of having to make changes to aspects of yourself. These fears are doing for your ego what the fear of physical harm is doing for you body.

Your fears are borne out of past conditioning and they are fuelled by memories of past events. Often it is the subconscious mind that is generating the fear response and you are not aware that it is happening. The first you consciously know about it is when you suddenly feel overwhelmed by fear.

By examining your fears, rather than just letting them automatically drive your responses you can understand what change it is you are resisting and get some insight into why you are resisting it. Change is an essential part of your future growth and development, and by understanding your fears you use mind power to free yourself for personal growth and success.

How can I learn from my fears?

Fear leads to a number of different response mechanisms that can be summed up as either fight or flight. You might lash out at someone or something either verbally or sometimes physically when you experience fear. Or you might try to avoid the stimulus by withdrawing, becoming depressed, ignoring what’s going on. A third mechanism is to distract yourself – watch excessive TV, substance abuse…

The first step in learning from fear is to be aware when you are feeling fear by looking for responses that could be caused by fear. The next time you feel you are about take some reflexive action that is motivated by fear, instead of just letting it happen, pause and ask yourself “What am I afraid of here?”

This won’t be easy at first, but if you persist you will be able to identify the source of your fear and learn from it.

Fear is a powerful emotion that drives you to do many things that you don’t want to. Often it is a way for the subconscious mind to protect your ego from change. This can prevent you making the changes you want in your life. You can use mind power to learn to recognise your fears and find out what is causing them. This is an important step in making it easier for you to achieve the life you want.

Mental Self Help - 6 Steps to Making Better Decisions

Do you find making the right decisions very difficult? Do you feel inadequate because you don’t make good decisions? Are you trapped in procrastination by your decision making ability? Take heart! Decision making can be quite easy provided you use a systematic approach to it. In fact you’ve already shown you’re able to make decisions - you’ve decided to read this article…

We are all faced with thousands of decisions every day. Some decisions are quite easy like when to eat lunch, whether to take a coat in case it rains and so on. You probably make these decisions with very little difficulty or thought. Other decisions are much harder, often they have major implications for your finances and your life like: should I take that new job? Should I prioritize that special project the boss has given me? Which car should I buy?

Making bigger and more complex decisions about things that are going to have a significant effect on you is often very intimidating and you may be like many people who end up procrastinating rather than acting decisively. Procrastination in decision making is one of the main causes for poor results in life and can lead you to making a poor decision when you are faced with an urgent need to make a decision that you could have made in a more controlled and effective manner. You need to learn to make faster and better decisions.

Use a system to make decision

A systematic approach can help to ensure that you make your decisions in the best way possible in a reasonable period of time. It will enable you to collect all the information you need to make a decision and analyse it as thoroughly as possible before you have to commit. Here are the steps to take:

1. Before you start, get clear on what you want out of the decision. What is the best possible result going to be like? Will it line up with your overall goals and purpose? Write this down.

2. Start with a blank piece of paper and write down all the facts you know about this decision - write down everything in the order they occur to you. Now go back over your list and ask yourself are these all facts, or are some of them half truths or emotional judgements. If you find half truths or emotional judgements either correct them or cross them out.

3. Now you have a good knowledge of the circumstances of the decision, spend a few moments brainstorming options. You’ll probably find that as you went through step 2 options that hadn’t occurred to you suddenly popped out. Look over your list - do you need to get some more information to improve your list of options? By listing all the options you can conceive you can be assured that you are making the best decision possible.

4. Go through each option. Ask yourself three questions: Based on what I know, what are the benefits and consequences of this option? How do I feel about this option - does it excite me, does my heart tell me it feels right? How well does this option meet the objective I wrote down in step 1?

5. Rate the options. The top option is your decision. Now look at it again, if necessary take a short break, you’ve come a long way and what you’re about to do is to commit yourself. Ask yourself: Does this make sense? Does it feel right to me? If your answer to these two questions is positive - congratulations you’re done! If the answer is negative - do you need some more information to help you rate them differently? Did you miss anything in thinking it through the first time round?

You must remember that no decision is taken with absolutely perfect information, no decision is completely irreversible, balance any uncertainty you have against the need to make a decision.

6. COMMIT! Once you’ve reached your conclusion, you must commit wholeheartedly to implementing your decision. You can be reassured that you’ve done the absolute best you can.

The first time you try a systematic approach you may find it slow and difficult. Like every skill, you need to practice it to become proficient at it. As you get better, you will find decision making gets easier and faster. Persist and you will be able to overcome procrastination and time wasting.

Mental Self Help - The Key to Success in Overcoming Depression and Anxiety

We all have times when our problems seem to be overwhelming – I know, I’ve faced some tough times in my life. You don’t seem to be able to make any progress, everything seems hopeless, there’s no way out of the mess your in… Maybe you’ve experience this state, or it’s even happening to you now.

Like so many people you end up looking outside yourself for the root cause of the problem. You blame other people, the government, society… the list of people and circumstances at fault can be endless.

The first challenge you face, or are facing, is to realise that the cause is almost always within your mind… How you respond to circumstances is key, the best form of help is mental self help.

Of course bad things happen to you, and people and circumstances beyond your control can contribute to them to some extent – your car could get wrecked as a result of someone else’s actions, or an downturn in the economy could mean that your firm ended up laying you off.

But even in these things you have some element of control… It’s rare for everyone to loose their jobs, and even if they do, some people will have worked at developing skills that they can use to quickly find another job. Or in the case of the car accident, you might have been in the wrong place at the wrong time as a result of some other decision that you made.

… So, to cut a long story short, you’ve got to understand that you are responsible for your circumstances, and you are the best person to do something about it. Very often your problems are greatly magnified in your own mind. Mental self help can assist you in overcoming your problems.

Of course, there are people out there who can help you and if you can find them, you should let them help you. However, their efforts will be tremendously reinforced if you take positive mental self help steps yourself.

Some suggestions for mental self help

Accept that most of the problem is within you. Once you have made this vital step, you need to take ownership for your own results in life and accept the responsibility for changing them.

Accept that while circumstances may look absolutely terrible today, with consistent and persistent effort, little by little you can change them. Ask yourself “how will this all look in 5 year’s time”. Will it really seem as significant as it does today – more often than not, the anwer is no.

All this is to say take the long view – over time your mind has the power to overcome tremendous obstacles. Mental self help is the best form of help you can get. Look at some examples of people who have overcome seemingly overwhelming circumstances to produce outstanding lives.

One example is the astrophysicist Stephen Hawkings, confined in a body wasted by motor neuron disease, yet able to produce amazing discoveries about the fundamental nature of our universe and write books about it!

Realise that you are not alone – no matter how bad your circumstances, it is very unlikely that you are the first person, or even the only person today, who is facing them. Look around you to see how other people have overcome similar problems – you might find some ideas that inspire you!

Although mental self help is very powerful, look for outside help to give you support and encouragement on your journey from where to are today to where you want to be. Make sure that you will also get accountability – don’t mix with others who are “happy being miserable”, only with people who really want to make things better.

Final thoughts

You may be down in the trough of despair today, however, no matter how bad things seem, you have the power to pull yourself out of it and even go on achieve bigger and better things than you ever have before.

The mental self help techniques in this article can help you to put things in to perspective and start the journey away from your present state of hopelessness to one where you are living the life you want and you are in control. Find more mental self help information on my website.

Goal Setting - The Power Of Writing Down Your Goal

Goal Setting involves setting specific, measurable and time targeted objectives. In an organizational or business context, it may be an effective tool for making progress by ensuring that participants are clearly aware of what is expected from them, if an objective is to be achieved. On a personal level, Goal setting is a process that allows people to specify then work towards their own objectives - most commonly with financial or career-based goals. Goal setting is a major component of Personal development.

Importance of writing down your goal!

Goal setting really is far more effective when specific steps are integrated with written time frames and dates to document our thinking. Reality: Written goals clarify thinking, objectify their potential, and reinforce commitment. Another secret of successful people is that they keep their written goals visible and review them daily. One famous study from Yale in 1953 said that the 3% of Yale graduates who had written goals had more wealth years later than the other 97% of the class combined. To reinforce the study conducted by Yale, l read a book recently titled “Look within or Do without” by Tom Bay. According to Mr Bay, Harvard Business School did a study on the financial status of its students 10 years after graduation and found that:

- As many as 27% of them needed financial assistance.

- A whopping 60% of them were living paycheck to paycheck.

- A mere 10% of them were living comfortably.

- And only 3% of them were financially independent.

The study also looked at goal setting and found these interesting correlations.

- The 27% that needed financial assistance had absolutely no goal setting process in their lives.

- The 60% that were living paycheck to paycheck had basic survival goals;such as managing to live paycheck to paycheck.

- The 10% that were living comfortably had general goals. They thought they knew where they were going to be in the next five years.

- The 3% that were financially independent had written out their goals and the steps required to reach them.

Yes, the result of this study seem a little too perfect, but l’m not suprise at the overall implication. On personal experience, my life was in a shambles until l begin to set goals and write them down, as well as planning my days that l started to witness significant improvement and success in my life and family. Then without goal setting, l was working more and getting less in return for my effort. Why? The answer is simple! No direction and focus.

I understand why you’d not want to write down your goals.Writing down goals seems so contrived. So banal. You think that it may work fine for someone less intelligent - much less individualistic but that’s not for you.

That’s what l used to feel. For years, felt that way about, and made fun of, anything of positive thinking, personal power, or self-help. Then, almost by accident, l stumbled onto Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People Program and that changed the way l thought about self-help.

If goal setting can work for Harvard Business School Graduates, shouldn’t it work for you too? And Let me live you with this quote by Joseph Addison “There is nothing we receive with so much reluctance as advice”.

Mental Self Help - Learn How Your Mind Controls Your Results in Life

Mental self help tip – understand what is driving your behaviours.

Do you sometimes have feelings that you can’t explain? Feelings of anger, feelings of euphoria, feelings of isolation? Do you feel the urge to overindulge in food or alcohol?

These feelings happen to everyone from time to time, but you may find that they are affecting your ability to achieve what you want, to have meaningful relationships with people, to perform well in your job…

These feelings are coming from somewhere and because they are strong emotions, they are driving how you behave, what you say, your body language and your tone of voice. They communicate more about you to people you interact with than just the content of your words.

A little bit of mental self help can enable you to make changes that can improve your results.

You are like an Iceberg

One of the interesting things about icebergs is that 90% of them is invisible, below the water line. As you approach one of these amazing cathedrals of ice, you see the wonderful creation that is the visible part above the surface of the water. When you get very close, you can peer down into the blue murky depths at the vast, mysterious expanse that lies hidden under water.

You are just like one of those icebergs – people judge you by what they can experience with their senses – your words and actions, your body language and tone of voice.

This is the visible portion of you and in truth, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more happening inside of you. These other invisible of you and your personality often drive your behaviours and ultimately your results in life…

Yet unless you have spent some time looking at yourself and watching your mind, you may not be aware of them.

A guide to your hidden depths

Wise men, great artists and scientists throughout the ages have attempted to explore this hidden part of the human mind. NLP or Neuro Linguistic programming is one particularly fruitful way of viewing the human mind and human behaviour.

The NLP mind model suggests that your mind is arranged in layers, a bit like the layers you see as you peer down into the water around an iceberg. The layers near the surface are relatively easy to see and to interact with, while there are deeper layers that are harder to access.

The first layer is beliefs – what do you believe to be true. You beliefs will have a strong impact on your behaviours and they in turn are strongly affected by the ‘deeper’ layers. You have thousands of beliefs covering everything that you encounter in life and you use them to help you make decisions about how to behave.

Underlying beliefs are values – what is important to you. You have fewer values than you have beliefs. You values have a big impact on your beliefs. If you change one of your values, over a period of time many of your beliefs will adjust. Your values are more deeply ingrained than your beliefs and it may take some time or some very strong event to change them.

Below values there is your identity – who you think you are – “I am a…”. Your identity is something you acquire at an early age and which only changes very slowly. Your identity includes cultural and other aspects of you and it has a strong effect on your values. . Changing your identity can be a very slow process.

Underlying all of this is your spiritual self – the essence of you.

Use mental self help to work on yourself

Once you understand this model, you can understand some of the things that are driving your behaviours. If your behaviours are producing undesirable results, you can look at them more closely and relate them to your beliefs, your values, your identity, your essential person.

You may be able to apply mental self help to change the underlying causes of your behaviour. There are ways to change beliefs, values, your identity. As you go deeper, the effects on your behaviours become harder to distinguish and they can take more effort and time to change.

Of course some problems are very deeply rooted and it may not be possible for you to resolve them without external help from experienced counsellors and therapists. However even in these cases, your willingness to help yourself is a great asset.

Self Help: Discover Your Own Potential

Innovation is a talent that everyone has but many people would refute that idea. If you’ve ever marvelled at somebody’s creative ability, you too can generate that same ability but it takes time. Everyone is born creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten were not limited to those who possessed potential; because the truth is, everybody has potential of one type or another.

Remember how long it took to learn to ride a bike or drive or to never commit the same mistake again. It’s the same with new ideas. It takes practice and a lot of time before this mind function develops fully. In this article you will find suggestions on how to incorporate this potential into your life.

Ignore what other people say. Follow your own instincts. Allowing for the input of others will only disrupt your evolving ideas. If you have an original idea, don’t waste time and effort trying to make people understand. They won’t. You will probably only receive adverse criticism. If all those geniuses had listened to their peers, we would probably still be living in the middle ages.

You need to spend time nurturing your potential. I cannot stress this strongly enough. This will also involve time management but with a little discipline you’ll be able to manage both.

Exercise. Take a walk. Run a mile or two. Send all those endorphins coursing through your veins. Exercising certainly clears and relaxes your mind and allows the imagination to run free.

Record your dreams. Some of those dreams you would never have thought of in your conscious mind. If you’ve had these dreams before and you probably have, this shows the untapped imagination you have within. So jot down those dreams. They may just ignite that imaginative spark in you.

Find your own style. You can always tell a Van Gogh from a Matisse. You’ll know Hemingway wrote something by the choice of words on the paper. You are the same. People will appreciate your originality more because it is uniquely yours and no one else has thought of those ideas. That ability allows people to see how valuable an asset you are.

Don’t hide behind nifty gadgets or tools. You don’t need the most expensive set of paints to produce a masterpiece. The same with writing. You don’t need some expensive fountain pen and really smooth paper for a bestseller. In fact, J.K. Rowling wrote the first book of the Harry Potter Series on bits of tissue. So what if you’ve got an expensive SLR camera if you’re a lousy photographer? Who cares if you’ve got the latest laptop if you can’t write at all? The artist actually reduces the number of tools he has as he becomes better at his craft: he knows what works and what doesn’t.

Nothing will work without passion. What wakes you up in the mornings? What keeps the flame burning? What is the one thing that you’ll die if you don’t do? Sometimes people with talent are overtaken by people who have greater ambitions. Think the hare and the tortoise. Somebody once said that if you’re not doing something that you want to do, then you don’t really want to do it. That’s true. Sometimes you want something so badly that you’ll allow nothing to get in your way. That is passion. Passion will keep you going.

Don’t worry about inspiration. You can’t force it; inspiration hits when you least expect it to and you should prepare for those unpredictable yet inevitable moments. An idea could strike you on the subway, yet alas, you have no sheet of paper on which to scribble down a thought that could change your life. Have a pen and paper with you at all times. Don’t make that same mistake again.

All these suggestions should encourage you to be alert to new possibilities. Bear in mind that you’re doing these things for your own satisfaction and not anyone else’s. Soon enough people will start to notice, enabling you to maintain a much higher profile as you increase and constantly tap your inner potential.

How Do You Measure Success?

Success is defined by many different people in many different ways. Usually, a person’s definition of success is actually an explanation of how they measure that success. According to the Webster’s Dictionary, success is “the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted.” By this definition of success, we are successful in some form or fashion every single day, throughout the day!

When people discuss whether or not they are successful, they are really discussing their personal measurement of success. Different people measure success in different ways. A housewife with little income may consider herself to be a success if her children are successful, well-mannered, productive members of society. However, a businessman may feel that the housewife is not a success because she is well in debt and does not have much of monetary value.

How you measure success will be determined by your core values. What are your core values? These are the beliefs that you hold to strongly in everything that you do. They can be spiritual, material, emotional, or social in nature. There are many exercises available in self-help books and websites on the web that will help you to discover your core values and beliefs. With these values, you will be able to determine how you measure success.

Likewise, you can determine your core values by how you already measure the success of yourself and others. If you feel that you are not successful unless you have a high tech computer, your own home, and a substantial bank account, then your core values are likely to be more material in nature. If you feel that you are not successful because you do not have time for church and family, then your core values are probably spiritual in nature. If you feel that you are not successful because you do not have time for yourself, your core values are primarily emotional in nature. Finally, if you feel that you are not successful because you have lost friendships on your path up the career ladder, then your core values are more social in nature.

Understanding your core values and beliefs are the best way to find happiness in success. When you understand your core values and apply them to your every day life and career path, you will find that your feelings of success or lack thereof will change drastically. This feeling of success will, in turn, create happiness and balance in your life, as well as self-confidence and emotional well-being.

Self Improvement and Self Help - The 3-Step Process

The self improvement and self help process involves steps that will not likely be achieved without the accomplishment of their preceding steps. As humans, we find it very difficult to adjust to changes at once, because we have already been programmed to do and see things a particular way. It does not mean that it is impossible. It simply entails that completing the final stage of the self improvement process requires discipline, patience and persistence.

Rome was not built in a day, as the popular proverb goes. Thus, if we want to reap the benefits and enjoy what our self-improvement and personal development changes can bring, we must learn to be patient. The process of self improvement does not and will not happen overnight. Remember that personal and professional changes take some time to get used to and some degree of adjustment on our part; so we should never seek to push ourselves to adapt immediately, or these efforts will just end up in vain.

Self improvement does not happen with simply thinking that we want to improve. We have to act on this ‘want’ and transform it into a ‘need’. Saying that we want to improve is just the beginning of this challenging process.

The basic self improvement process consists of three simple steps:

1) Deciding that you really want to improve,

2) Acting on it, and

3) Maintaining the goal in mind.

To truly get ahead in life, we have to accept that sacrifices will have to be made. For example, if we choose to join a Stop Drinking support group, we have to exercise maximum discipline to stay away from the ‘enemy’. We should make every effort to avoid situations that put us in a position where choice becomes very difficult and just stay focus by repeating the benefits of the endeavour to ourselves.

We must have a good follow through for the personal development process to really work, If we only act on it and then change our minds, or fail to stick with it, it would be like we never started to achieve anything, at all. Keeping both our eyes on the goal at all times is key. Self improvement does not stop when something is accomplished, because it is a continuous process.

Who ever said getting ahead in life was easy? Your journey will surely be difficulty, not just based on external factors, but also from yourself. If you truly want to better your life, you must realize that your worst enemy will be yourself - which is, ironically, the most difficult part to conquer. However, if you set your heart and soul into your goal and convince yourself that though the path is rocky there is a great reward waiting for you at the finish line, you will be able to survive and excel.

Life is a challenge. Conquering your inner fears and apprehensions will make your journey much more challenging. However, it will not be so if you know that you can do it. The process of self improvement and person development is challenging, but very rewarding once you surpass the obstacles. You just have to keep a positive and open mind all the time.
